About Poet and Sidereal Astrologer Lyn Dalebout
“Lyn Guiding Wedding Ceremony” by Claire Dibble
The origins of the name EarthWord SkyWord stem from my earliest memories. I have always been intrigued with Heaven and Earth. At dawn, I would arise early to identify the voice of a new bird with my Audubon Western Bird Guide, and at night I would often gaze longingly at the Milky Way, attempting to comprehend its mystery. When we started an outdoor museum called the Creek Club in the streambed that ran through our family yard, I chose birds and the planets as the subjects of my exhibits.
In college, I received an interdisciplinary BS in Biology/Geography with a minor in Literature. On a whim in 1979, I had my star chart done, and astrology became a part-time passion, and then a full time career in 1994. In my education as a poet, I have taken many classes with my favorite poets and writers, and studied Creative Writing at Naropa University. I started my publishing company, Blue Bison Press, in 1996 and published my first book of poems Out of the Flames at that time.
Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks
I have lived in Grand Teton National Park since 1980. I count this good fortune as one of the most valuable aspects of my life experience. I am continually inspired by outdoor adventures, the steady study of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem through four dramatic seasons, and the countless interactions with wild animals from grizzly bears to bison, and bird life from chickadees to eagles. I feel especially blessed to be part of a visionary and creative community.
Voice-overs, song and dance
As a performer, I compiled and narrated two CD collections for Northword Press on the work of Emily Dickinson (Heaven Below the Heaven Above ) and Walt Whitman (Go Directly to the Creation). I was honored to be the “voice” of Mardy Murie’s writings in the film Arctic Dance (Mardy is considered to be the mother of the modern-day conservation movement). I have been a poet, dancer and singer with organizations such as the Grand Teton Music Festival, Trout Unlimited and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
As an educator, I have been a mentor for the Ecology of Residency with the University of Utah Environmental Humanities Graduate Program. Since 1976, I have taught in many contexts with the Teton Science Schools, The Murie Center and the National Park Service.
Poetry and writing
My writing has appeared in publications such as Northern Lights and Women Outside, and in anthologies such as Stories of the Wild and Leanin’ into the Wind.
I love to support and promote other writers and artists. As a Board Member of Grand Teton Association, I started the Writers in the Park series in Grand Teton National Park, and co-founded the Moose Readings, an open-mike forum for writers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
In my years as an astrologer, I have developed a truly unique, evolutionary way of interpreting the astrological chart. I have been an online astrological columnist for Delicious Living and Gear Goddess magazines. I started blogging in 2009 with the launch of the EarthSky Oracle and Star Signposts.
Jin Shin Jyutsu
I have been a long-time student and practitioner of Jin Shin Jyutsu, a Japanese form of energy work. I do sessions for clients as well as incorporate this practice into my writing workshops to assist students to become better listeners, thus enhancing their creativity.
I look forward to spending time in the wild with the animal others and sharing the vibrant creativity of humanity at this key juncture in Earth’s history. And most importantly, I look forward to meeting you.
